What
kind of game is Shenmue?
It's very much like an RPG. There are things that make
it very different also. Everything is very interactive, and I think (by the
looks of movies/pics) it plays more like an adventure game. It's a twist of
adventure and RPG. There is even some fighting mixed in. The creator, Yu Suzuki,
calls it FREE. Full Reactive Eyes Entertainment, if you want to sound sophisticated
:).
What's
the story, basiscally?
You
are Ryo. Your mother has died, and your father dies just before completing
your martail arts training. (I guess) the death is a mystery, and you have
to figure out (if murder) who killed him, or how he died. Maybe some revenge-action
mixed in there too :).
What's
it for/ when's it coming out?
Sega
Dreamcast. In Japan, December 29, 1999. For the US, November 14th, 2000.
Is
the whole game going to be just a bunch of "Press A" Dragon's Lair
style QTE sequences?
Absolutely
not. The Quick Timer Events and Quick Time Battle sequences are used in place
of most cut scenes. The whole game has much, much, much more depth than that-
I don't know how that rumor really started. I've heard the QTE sequences are
also really quite fun.
Where
can I get the import?
Your
best bet just might be a local import store. Check for small game shops, rather
than large businesses. As for an online store, try Game Cave. Imports usually
run about $10 (or more) more expensive than the domestic version, but depending
on where the game was made (in this case, and in most cases, Japan), the game
comes out first in Japan. You'll have to get your Dreamcast modded, or do
a "swap trick" (search for "swap trick" on a message board,
or ask someone, but I wouldn't know how), or install a mod chip. For modding,
check Level Six or NCSX.
I can't vouch for either of them personally- I don't import (I don't speak
Japanese). But all I've heard of them are good things.
Where
can I get some music from the game?
See
my music section.
